Side Notes: In the Bleak of Winter” is a poem by the English poet Christina Rossetti and was published in a magazine in 1872. It was set to music 35 years later. This is one of the lesser-known Christmas songs that I think every person should be familiar with. One of my all-time favorite performances of this tune is done by the Norwegian singer Sissel Kyrkjebø. If you’ve never heard hersing, you should search for her arrangement of this song. I tried really hard to keep this arrangement simple, while not losing some of the harmonies. It came out a little more challenging than I would prefer for an “easier” book, but I hope it is a welcome challenge as you start to become familiar with the chord patterns, I use in many of my songs.
