This brand new book of VIOLIN and PIANO DUETS featuring arrangements by Jason Tonioli, John Knudson and Sadie Armstrong. This book is similar to the piano solo book but is DIFFERENT. This book will not work without having another instrument to play the violin part. These arrangements are modifications of the piano solo book of Jason’s Favorite Hymns and Children’s Hymns written by Janice Kapp Perry. If you aren’t familiar with her songs, they are some of the most memorable and touching songs about Jesus that you will ever hear. Each song and the lyrics in the book are “Christian Friendly” for all denominations and the music is perfect for prelude, musical numbers. The songs are written as piano solos, but it is possible to sing to the songs as well. Monica Scott also assisted with one of the piano arrangements in this new book.

Each song is written for Violin and Piano. One of the songs (What is this thing that Men Call Death?) does include a Cello version that can be played as well.

About this book:
This book came about a bit by accident, but accidents are sometimes produce some of the best music. Most of the songs in this book were created 30+ years ago and have been sung by children, by choirs and families for years. For me, many of these melodies were sung by my mother to me as a child and I have sung these melodies to my own children when they were young.
The words and music are timeless and through many tender mercies, I had the opportunity to arrange piano solos of these songs and share them in a piano solo book that was originally released at the end of 2024. I didn’t realize there were so many people who would be interested in these songs written as piano solos and have been thrilled to have shared the piano solos with so many people.
I have been blessed to work with many talented people over the years and in particular have some amazing violinists and string players who are close friends. While in the studio I would show some of these piano solos to my violin friends and they would play along with me for fun. We quickly realized these arrangements had potential to be something amazing but in order to do a great duet, both players need to be able to dance and have their moments where they shine.
Piano solos don’t typically make great duets without significant changes and adjustments. Over a period of almost 14 months, dozens and dozens of writing sessions, practices and recording sessions we created what you see in this book. Few songs I have arranged or written have received the number or edits, complete resets and thought that has gone into these duets. Our goal throughout the process was to ensure both the violin and piano parts were playable for a “normal” violinist and were also pleasant to anyone listening. Often times instrumentalists can go too far in showcasing the high and often squeaky range of a violin that can cause ear fatigue for the listener, no matter how amazing the violinist might be at their craft. These arrangements are for everyone, especially for intermediate level players. We hope that they will be able to be played and enjoyed without having to practice and prepare for hours, whether you are the piano player or string player.
Our hope is that these new duets that we’ve created will honor the legacy of these tunes and the life’s work of Janice Kapp Perry. We also hope that the new take on this classic songs will become some of your favorites and that the music will be able to be played and heard by generations to come, preserving these melodies and the messages that they share.
