Side Notes: The words to this song were written by Isaac Watts (1674-1748). Watts is credited with writing more than 700 hymns, many of which are still sung today. These words come from Psalm 23, ‘The Lord is my shepherd, I shall not want’. The tune for this hymn is an Appalachian folk tune titled ‘Resignation’ and the composer is unknown. The last line of this Psalm “and I will dwell in the house of the Lord forever,’ is rephrased in the hymn to say “No more a stranger or a guest, but like a child at home.” I love this interpretation and hope that we will all feel at home with the Lord in the future. I’m certain we will not feel like a stranger when our time comes to pass to the next life and hope we feel as we did when we were a child and knew we were both loved and safe at home.
