This may be one of the most unlikely books I’ve ever created.

For a long time, I never set out to make my arrangements easier. In fact, for nearly my first fifteen books and albums, I mostly wrote the music the way it came to me. For nearly a decade, piano teachers, music stores, and customers would ask me to create music for someone who could play a few hymns, but needed something more approachable. Maybe they had smaller hands. Maybe they didn’t have hours to practice. Maybe they just wanted something beautiful they could sit down and play.

When I released the first Easier Hymns book, something happened that I didn’t expect. It quickly became my most popular book of all time, outselling my other books by nearly three times.

I then created a second Easier Hymns book with more arrangements. Three years after releasing that book, the requests kept coming. I received emails, comments, and messages from people asking, “Please do a third Easier Hymns book.” Many told me they used these arrangements for prelude music, church meetings, or quiet moments at home because they were beautiful, peaceful, and didn’t require hours of practice. The comment I hear most often is that these pieces sound much harder than they actually are to play.

That has really become the goal of the Easier Hymns series.

These arrangements aren’t beginning piano pieces, but they also aren’t written to be difficult just for the sake of being difficult. They are meant for that in-between level: someone who can already play a few hymns from a hymnbook, but would enjoy having something more flowing, expressive, and simplified. At the same time, my hope is that more advanced pianists can still sit down and enjoy playing through the entire book, using these arrangements as a simple roadmap they can build on.

When I say “easier,” I don’t mean the music should sound plain or beginner-level to the listener. My hope is that these arrangements feel rich and reverent, while still being comfortable enough to play without feeling overwhelmed.

For this third volume, I chose many older, classic public domain hymns that I feel have some of the most beautiful and timeless melodies. No matter what denomination you belong to, or where you worship, these hymns carry messages that have blessed people for generations. They can work well as prelude music, special musical numbers, or simply as peaceful music in your home.

For the first time in this series, I’ve also included chord symbols above the music. As I added them, I realized there is quite a bit of depth and color in these simple arrangements. Even when the notes are more approachable, the harmonies still help create the feeling and emotion I love in hymn arrangements.

My hope is that this book will find a home on many pianos and be played often. I hope these hymns find their way into homes, chapels, churches, and quiet moments when someone needs comfort or peace. Most of all, I hope the music helps others feel and connect with the spirit that comes with great music.

If these arrangements become part of the musical soundtrack to some of your meaningful moments, then I’ll feel like this book and my efforts have been a success.
