Side Notes: I’ve avoided arranging “Battle Hymn of the Republic” for years because of how tricky the rhythm can be—and because most hymnals don’t notate it the same way. It’s a powerful tune with deep roots in American history, but one that often feels more complicated on the page than it should.
In this arrangement, I decided to lean into that challenge and use it as a teaching moment. You’ll find sections written in different rhythmic approaches, including triplets and 12/8 time. As you play, listen carefully to the pulse and choose a tempo that feels natural. If you teach or are learning piano, this is a good reminder that the same music can be written—and understood—in more than one way.
