Side Notes: For those who live in the USA, this song is known as “My Country ’Tis of Thee,” but it may be better known elsewhere as the British National Anthem, “God Save the King.” I first noticed this connection while attending church in Canada and visiting my mother’s family, when I heard different words sung to this familiar patriotic tune. No matter what side of the pond you find yourself on, or what words you grew up singing to this melody, it remains one of my favorites. I tried to ensure this arrangement sounds both majestic and patriotic while still being suitable for performance either as a prelude or as a featured musical number. For nearly a century, this song served as the de facto “unofficial” National Anthem of the United States. The American lyrics were first performed on July 4, 1831, in Boston and were written to symbolize American democracy in contrast to British monarchy. The composer of the melody is unknown, though the tune was first documented and performed in 1745.
