About this Song:
Side Notes: I love the story of the composer of this song, Will Thompson (1847–1909). After facing repeated rejection trying to sell his music, he started his own publishing company, which later expanded to selling pianos, organs, and sheet music. This tune was originally published under the title “The World Has Need of Christian Men,” though it’s best known by its chorus, “Put Your Shoulder to the Wheel.”
The phrase dates back to the 1700s and was used to describe the effort required to push a heavy wagon or vehicle that had become stuck—often bogged down in mud—requiring real work and sometimes the help of others to get it moving again. I think many of us face moments like that in life, when progress feels hard and we need help getting unstuck. Just as often, we cross paths with others who could use a hand along the way. I hope this tune stays with you as a reminder to put in the effort, to stop when needed, and to help lift others forward—even if it means getting a little muddy yourself.
The world would be a better place if each of us were willing to treat others with kindness and love, and to step in and serve our neighbor when help is needed.
