Side Notes: My earliest memories of singing come from being a child—singing with my mother at home and with other kids at church. More than forty years later, I still spend a good portion of my Sundays playing piano for children to sing to in Primary. I’ve also spent many hours in my studio helping bring new children’s songs to life with our choir. Many of these songs are built on the simplest melodies and messages, yet the joy children sing with is unmistakable. In contrast, it’s hard not to notice how often adults barely sing—or don’t sing at all—during hymns in church. It would do many of us well to remember the invitation found in Psalms 47:1: “O clap your hands, all ye people; shout unto God with the voice of triumph.” I believe God feels joy when we allow ourselves to feel joy and help others feel it too. Children seem to understand this instinctively, and there is real value in learning from their example and the simple messages they sing. If you ever find yourself sitting next to a non-singer in a church meeting, do your part—share an open hymnbook with them while you sing, and help them remember how it feels when you praise God with song.
