Side Notes: As the invasion of Ukraine unfolded, I felt drawn to learn more about the country’s music and cultural history. In doing so, I discovered that Ukraine’s national anthem is not only a haunting melody, but one with lyrics that feel strikingly relevant to the moment we are living in. The English translation of the text includes these lines: “The glorious spirit of Ukraine shines and lives forever. Blessed by fortune, brotherhood will stand together. Like dew before the sun, enemies will fade. We will rule and prosper in our promised land. We will lay down our soul and body for cherished freedom. Cossack blood will raise a joyful nation.”
I chose to include this piece because it reflects a significant global event from this period of history – and because the music itself speaks powerfully of identity, endurance, and hope.
