Side Notes: The idea for this tune came right at the end of a rainstorm. The wind, rain, and flashes of lightning had passed, and everything around me was calm. You could smell the rain on the cement and grass, and everything felt renewed… like it had been given fresh energy. In life, we all go through hard things. They often feel like storms. Some last longer than others, but every storm eventually comes to
an end. And when it does, there is a quiet calm that follows.
As you play this song, picture yourself in one of your favorite places. Imagine what that place would feel like right after a light fresh rain. Picture what it would look like, smell like, and feel like. If you do that as you play, I think you’ll find yourself playing with more feeling and emotion than if you simply play the notes on the page.
Don’t be afraid to pause and create silence between the phrases and chords when it feels right. This song will be better with lots of Rubato and interpretation as you play it.
